Review – “The Shore/Palm Sunday 7″” – Kalle Mattson

reviewed by Laura Stanley

Ever since I reviewed Kalle Mattson’s album Anchors this past April, I feel like I’ve been hearing about them everywhere! For a while, every time I turned on CBC Radio 3, Kalle Mattson was playing. With Kalle Wainio at the helm of a band that combines a gritty folk sound with a songwriting style of old, it’s no wonder that Kalle Mattson has been receiving attention.

Set to re-release their album Anchors on November 8th on their new Winnipeg based label, Parliament of Trees, The Shore/Palm Sunday 7″ will be an add-on to the album. The seven inch features two songs that were recorded around the same time as Anchors but were just finished up this summer.

“The Shore” is a perfect match to the songs from Anchors, combining a fuzzy and noisy instrumentation with almost spacey sounding additional sounds. Wainio, with a great reverb effect to his voice, keeps with the fashion of Anchors to make an undoubtedly melodious track.

In contrast to the relatively mellow Kalle Mattson songs that we’ve come to know, Wainio and Co. throw a curve ball with “Palm Sunday.” Despite its loud and aggressive nature with Wainio half-screaming and half-singing, the song still holds true to the same lyrical content and passion that the band is all about.

A great preview of the talents that Kalle Mattson upholds, The Shore/Palm Sunday 7″ shows a great contrast of songs but is able to paint the picture of what this great band is all about.

The Shore/Palm Sunday 7″ will be available for purchase through Bandcamp  and iTunes November 8th but “The Shore” is available through a “Pay with a Tweet or a Facebook Post” option (Which is a really, really cool idea) on their website.
